Title: Introduction to the Einstein constraint equations

Abstract: This lecture describes the geometric origin of the constraint equations, and demonstrates their importance in applications. These include the proof of local existence for the wave-reduced Einstein equations, and the structure of the ADM Hamiltonian form of the evolution equations. Techniques for constructing solutions of the constraints are summarized, and the relation between the 2nd variation forumula of minimal surface theory and the quasi-spherical construction of solutions of the constraints is described.
